Notes for CONRAD BRAKE:

Obituary published in The Decatur Daily Democrat, 10 Oct 1910:

"Conrad Brake is dead" was the news that spread rapidly through the streets at 11:20 o'clock

today noon, and at first could scarcely be believed by the citizens and his many friends who had

talked on the sreets with him, one of the most generally known and most prominent aged men

of the city, but three-quarters of an hour before. In fact the death came as one of the greatest

and most unexpected shocks that the city has known in some time, coming as a result of a

sudden attack of heart. Mr. Brake, who has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. H. F.

Costello on Third Street, for the past eighteen years, arose this morning as usual, but stated

that he did not feel so very well, having been bothered with stomach trouble, which in turn

acted upon the heart. He dressed, however, and came downtown, and after attending to

business matters returned home again about 10:30 o'clock. Just as he entered the house and

walked toward the kitchen door he called to his daughter, Mrs. Costello, that he did not feel well

-- that he felt so weak -- and before anyone could get to him, he sank to his knees in the dining

room door. Mrs. Costello called to her daughter, Agnes, who for the first in a long time had

remained at home in the morning from her work, and she in turn summoned Dr. Costello,

Daniel Donovan, W. J. Bosse and others of his old friends who were within call, and the aged

man was made as comfortable as possible. He never rallied, however, and was unconscious

when the end came easily and peacefully at 11:20 o'clock.

During his several hours spent in the city's business heart this morning he visited as usual with

his innumerable friends with whom he delighted in talking over the events of the day, being a

staunch Democrat, and having a keen interest in political news and everything of current

interest. He called at the County Treasurer's office a little after 10 o'clock where he signed a

check for his fall taxes and sat awhile in a chair behind the counter talking to the officials and

speaking of the speech at the court room Wednesday night. Treasurer Yager offered him a

cigar, which he refused, stating that he did not smoke. He then came to the Democrat office,

which was one of his favorite places of calling, and then on down the street to the Old Adams

County bank, where he drew five dollars for his immediate use. This was probably the last place

he visited on his way home. During the course of the morning he met several friends, among

them Scott Ellis, who inquired as to his health. He stated he did not feel so very well, that he

was getting old but that he was prepared to go any time, little thinking, perhaps, that it would

be so soon.

Had Mr. Brake lived until the thirty-first of this month he would have been eighty-four years of

age. He was born at Esterwegen, Hanover, Germany, October 31, 1826, and emigrated to

America in 1847, when twenty-one years of age, the voyage taking nine weeks. He landed at

New Orleans on America's star of patriotic days, July 4th, and came thence to Cincinnati, O.,

and then on to Indiana, settling in this city. Much of the way from Cincinnati, he traveled on

foot. He was employed here by the Crabs and J. D. Nuttman Bros. Stores for twenty-five years,

his first salary being fifty cents a day, one-half of which was to be taken out in goods. In 1867

he was elected Trustee of Washington township for a four-year term. He also served as

Commissioner of Adams County for three terms, from 1886 to 1897, which is perhaps longer

than any other Commissioner in the history of the county. In the early seventies he also held a

city office, being a city councilman for three terms at the munificent of $12 per year. Mr. Brake

was a man of untiring energy, and a faithful Democrat to the last. For the past thirty years he

has lived a retired life, having by dint of untiring energy and commendable economy assessed a

comfortable competence.

He was married forty-nine years ago to Miss Wilhelmina Holthouse, a sister of John and Peter

Holthouse of this city. The wife died just three years after marriage, leaving two little

daughters, one, Mrs. Costello, being but two weeks, old at that time. The two daughters are still

living, the other being Christena, wife of Max Gerard, of Louisville, Kentucky. He leaves two

sisters, Mrs. Cena Feldhuer and Mrs. Mary Rave, of Cincinnati, Ohio; also one brother in

Wisconsin. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic

Church, of which he was a devout member, and faithful attendant, and burial will take place at

the St. Joseph cemetery.

Holthouse, Anthony -- April 10, 1844 -- December 31, 1907

Based on "Indiana Gazetteer," published by E. Chamberlain, 1849

DECATUR, the County Seat of Adams County, on the west side of St. Mary's River, in Washington Township, was first settled in 1837, by Jacob Huffer, Samuel L. Rugg and John Reynolds. There are in Decatur seventy houses, of which three are brick, twenty-one frame and the residue of logs, with a population of about 400. This town is twenty-four miles southeast from Fort Wayne, twenty-eight miles north of Portland, ten miles west of Willshire, Ohio, and 110 northeast of Indianapolis.

In 1849: ADAMS COUNTY is bounded on the east by the State of Ohio, on the south by Jay County, on the west by Wells, and on the north by Allen County. It is twenty-four miles in length, from north to south, and fourteen in breadth, and contains 336 square miles. The county was organized in the year 1836, though a large tract of territory lying between Allen and Randolph had been previously called Adams County, after the distinguished statesman who bore that name; yet no organization had taken place. The population of Adams County, in 1840, was 2,284; at this time, it is near 5,600. The face of the country is generally level. Near the St. Mary's and Wabash, it is undulating, but not hilly. There are no barrens in the county, and not exceeding ten sections of prairie, all wet, and twenty-five or thirty of river bottoms. The residue is upland, heavily timbered. The wet prairies form the sources of the creeks and from several of them water runs into the St. Lawrence, and also the Mississippi. The most of them show traces of beaver dams. The soil is clay mixed with marl, and apparently becomes more fertile the longer it is cultivated. The timber is oak, hickory, buckeye, ash, beech, elm, lynn, walnut, sycamore, poplar and cottonwood. The surplus products consist of wheat, corn and hay, and horses, cattle and hogs, in considerable numbers, are raised for exportation. The county is divided into twelve townships, Preble, Root and Union in the north; next, St. Mary's, Washington and Kirkland; then French, Monroe and Blue Creek; and in the south, Jefferson, Wabash and Hartford.

There are in Adams County three Lawyers, five Physicians, six Ministers of the Gospel, five stores, three groceries, six warehouses, one merchant mill, one oil mill, one ashery, one tannery, two saddlers, ten shoemakers, seven blacksmiths, two tailors, five cabinet makers and twenty carpenters.

The principal streams are the St. Mary's and Wabash Rivers, which are about equal in size, and their average width is about 160 feet. The former was frequently navigated with keel and flatboats, but navigation is now obstructed by milldams. The public buildings in the county consist of a Courthouse and Jail, both of wood, fireproof offices for the Clerk, Recorder, Auditor and Treasurer, and one Presbyterian, one Methodist and one Roman Catholic Church. The common school districts are generally organized and support schools from three to ten months in the year. The County of Adams, when properly improved, will be a first rate farming region.

A. Holthouse Dies Suddenly of Apoplexy.

At His Home at 11:30 Today.

He was apparently in Good Health- Came Home from Work; Died in Chair.

Funeral to be Thursday.

-------

A. Holthouse died this morning about 11:30 of apoplexy at his home on Mathews avenue and Church street.

He had come from the mill at eleven o'clock and had gone into the house and after looking over the daily paper had picked up one of his grandchildren who was present and while playing with it was striken. The family discovered his condition and immediately telephoned for a physician at the hospital and for Father

Weible who went to his house as hurridly as possible but before either reached him he was dead. He died in the chair.

His death was a great shock to the family and to his numerous friends of the city, as he apparently was enjoying the best of health. He spent all the forenoon at his office at the mill and the annual settlement of the companies were being made this morning. He came up to the bank about nine o'clock and deposited in his box a number of his private papers, remarking to Cashier Hall, as he came to the bank holding up the paper " These represent to me a life ________".

Mr. Holthouse was sixty-two years old and had been a resident of Jonesboro for about eight years, coming to this city from Decatur, Indiana and has been engated in the ____ber business, being secretary treasurer of both the Jonesboro Bending Company and The Jonesboro Spoke Company, besides he has stock in other corporations of the city, being a director in the Jonesboro Trust Company Bank.

Besides his wife he leaves nine children, three boys, and six girls; they are Mrs. Fred Falk, Mrs. Bert Lynch, Miss Bertha and Minnie Holthouse, L.C., Barney and Fritz Holthouse and two daughters who are members of the Sisters Order of St. Benedict. All of the children were at home or in Jonesboro except the two latter, one of them being now in Wisconsin and the other at Cairo, Ill. They were notified of his death and will arrive for the funeral.

Mr. Holthouse was a prominent member of St. Roman's Congregation and the funeral will take place from the church Thursday and will be conducted by Rev. Father Weibel, assisted by other priests, after which interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery, west of the city.
