1st LT Richard Mershon Milikin III was in the rear seat of the RF-4C
Phantom aircraft piloted by Capt. Tiff Hawks the night of 19 August 1966 when the plane took a hit that apparently injured
or killed him and prevented him from ejecting.
The military
records below chronical the period when he was listed as MIA and subsequent attempts to locate his crash and burial site in
North Vietnam and recover his remains. While the burial site was located, remains were never found due to possible disinterment
of his grave or the disturbance of his grave site by cultivation of the area as a rice field.
