Following high school she entered Martin College in Pulaski, Tennessee earning a Bachelor of Science in 1958 and in 1959
earned a Master of Arts degree at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee. She began her teaching career
in a Nashville Metro School but soon joined the faculty at Father Ryan High School in 1963, notably hired as the first Lay
Person member of the faculty. During her time at Father Ryan she loved sharing her knowledge of science, especially biology.
She retired from Father Ryan in August of 2001 after 39 years and was honored at a retirement reception. She was beloved
by all and remembered fondly by her students for her unique teaching style and, more importantly, for her remarkable rapport
with her students.
In addition to teaching she enjoyed being a homeowner and gardener, was an avid crossword puzzle solver and loved preparing
her home for Christmas with family and friends. She attended Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville and was a supporter of the
music program there. Toward the end of her teaching career, she found time to supervise caring for her mother and her aunt,
Nella Wood Helton, who were both in nursing homes for some time.
She made countless trips to Lawrenceburg along with taking care of endless paper work to make sure that they felt loved
and were well cared forintheirfinaldays. A MemorialVisitationtimetorememberNancy is planned for some time in June at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton
Funeral Home & Memorial Park--date to be announced on their web site (www. woodlawn-roesch-pattonfh.com) as well as on

There was no immediate service although her older sister Ann is reported to be planning a service at a later date. There
also is no obituary that I can find, so I have put together what I can find in public records about Nancy and her close family.

"Jackie Cheatwood, who broadcasts rock 'n roll and morning madness daily over WDXE-FM, wrote:

ATLANTA: Roy Wayne Thompson, brought
joy in song
By Kay Powell The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 07/17/08
By chance and on
a hum, Wayne Thompson escaped utter boredom.
The former salesman pronounced one Sunday afternoon that he was bored
to death, said his wife, Gretchen Thompson of Atlanta. She was reading the want ads and had seen one for the weekend front
desk at Canterbury Court, a retirement community in their neighborhood.
"I told him, go next door and get this job.
It would be perfect for you, and he did. He got it," Ms. Thompson said. For six years, 3 to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays,
Mr. Thompson manned the front desk.
"The residents just took him to heart, and he did likewise," said his supervisor,
Canterbury Court marketing director Bob Noble of Athens.
When he heard the weekend security guard humming a gospel
song, Mr. Thompson chimed in with his deepest bass and found his next happy niche, his wife said.
The memorial service
for Roy Wayne Thompson, 72, of Atlanta is at 2 p.m. Friday at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill. He died July 10 following
surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital.
"He had a beautiful, resonating, deep, deep bass voice seldom heard outside professional
singers, especially gospel singers," said the weekend security guard and longtime gospel singer Ken Campbell of Ellenwood.
"I can get below E flat, and he went on down another half octave below that all the way to A flat with very little effort."
Mr. Thompson recruited residents Alex M. Johnston, called Mac, and Leroy Howell, whom he knew sang barbershop quartet. They
became the Canterbury Four entertaining within their community and for other older people and singing at funerals and in churches.
Mr. Johnston is 93, and at 72, Mr. Thompson was the baby of the group, Mr. Campbell said.
"We got together and sounded
doggone good, if I do say so myself," Mr. Johnston said. Residents thought they sounded doggone good, too, and regularly asked
them to perform.
Mr. Thompson was a lifetime spontaneous singer. "He sang with everything," his wife said. Canterbury
Four was his showcase, and "Down by the Riverside" was his signature song.
"He favored that one because he could show
off his deep bass voice," Mr. Johnston said. "He could get way down on that, really hit the bottom."
Beyond being
fun to sing with, Mr. Thompson was the greatest friend he ever had, he said. Two years ago, Mr. Johnston wrestled with the
decision to give up driving. "When you lose your car, you lose your independence. He said, 'Look, you shouldn't be driving,
and I'll be your driver.' "
That began an adventure in lunches and shopping for the men. "We hit every barbecue place
in the tri-county area," Mr. Johnston said. Their conversations ranged from music to mutual friends to politics, a favorite
interest of Mr. Thompson's, whose nephew is former senator and presidential candidate Fred Thompson.
At Canterbury
Court, Mr. Thompson probably knew all 280 residents, which ones enjoyed his teasing and which liked his jokes and how to brighten
each one's day.
"He was rock solid and straightforward," Mr. Noble said.
"There was nothing false about him.
He really looked forward to being here. You obviously don't come across a person like that every day."
Survivors other
than his wife include his daughter, Molly Hottel of Decatur, and two grandsons.
