Taking a page out of George W. Bush’s sex education playbook, Pope Benedict XVI said on Tuesday that sexual abstinence is the best way to fight the spread of AIDS and condoms would only widen the problem.
While aboard his plane headed towards Cameroon, the Pope stated, “You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms, on the contrary, it increases the problem.”
At least 22 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with H.I.V. but Rebecca Hodes from Treatment Action Campaign in South Africa believes Pope Benedict’s approach to fighting against new H.I.V infections is not a serious one since “his opposition to condoms conveys that religious dogma is more important to him than the lives of Africans."
